Last September 2 2017 at the Nursing Library of Silliman
University, Dr. Rozzano Locsin had a 2 hour lecture on the theme “Nursing
Robots: Robotic Technology and Human Caring for the Elderly that was attended
by the nursing students, graduate students and faculty of Silliman University
as well as the nursing students, graduate students and faculty of nearby
universities such as Negros Oriental State University and St. Paul University
Dumaguete.
Dr. Locsin cited the need for a revision of the definition
of nursing due to the advancement in robotic technology. In Japan, robots are
now able to perform nursing procedures on people such as starting an IV with
89% precision rate, delivering bedbaths, performing bedmaking, interacting with
people and many others which led him to believe that in the future, nurses
would no longer be relevant in the performance of their duties because robots
can do a better job , require no compensation and are able to work 24/7. Dr.
Locsin cited that a redefinition of nursing as more than “doing” needs to be
done in order for nurses to keep their relevance in healthcare.
After the talk, there was a very active interaction between
Dr. Locsin and the audience. Questions were asked and were all promptly
answered by Dr. Locsin. Then the induction of new BND members followed in the
person of Joel Rey Acob, Ayeza Cathrina Tinagan, Freslyn Lim-Saco, Cliford
Kilat, Flordivilla Florida and Sarah Annabelle Ragay.
