1. What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing, and how did you end up in Ireland?
My motivation to pursue a career in nursing stemmed from my personal experiences during my mother’s prolonged illness. As a child, I witnessed her frequent hospitalizations, and the toll that her condition took on our family deeply affected me. These experiences not only instilled in me a sense of empathy and compassion but also highlighted the crucial role of healthcare professionals in caring for those in need. My mother had always hoped that I would become a nurse, not just to provide care for our family but also to be the first in our family to attain a professional degree. Her encouragement and my desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others fueled my determination to enter the nursing profession.
When it came time to
decide where to pursue my career, I chose to move to Ireland, a decision driven
by my ambition to seek new opportunities and challenges. Ireland's reputation
for having a robust and advanced healthcare system was a major attraction. I
was particularly drawn to the country's commitment to high standards of patient
care and the use of innovative medical practices. Additionally, I was eager to
immerse myself in an environment where I could grow both professionally and
personally.
The prospect of working with a diverse patient population was another significant factor in my decision to relocate. Ireland’s multicultural society offers the chance to interact with and care for people from various backgrounds, which is invaluable for a nursing professional. Such diversity not only enhances cultural competence but also broadens one’s perspective on patient care. This experience is vital in today’s globalized world, where understanding and respecting cultural differences can greatly impact the quality of healthcare delivery.
2. Can you describe a pivotal
moment in your nursing career that has defined your leadership style?
A defining moment in my nursing career occurred during a critical incident in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where swift and decisive action was imperative. In that intense situation, I was tasked with leading my team through a crisis that required not only quick decision-making but also a steady hand. As the events unfolded, I became acutely aware of the vital importance of clear communication, maintaining composure under pressure, and providing unwavering support to my colleagues.
This experience had a profound impact on me, fundamentally shaping my approach to leadership within the healthcare setting. It highlighted the critical role that effective communication plays in ensuring that everyone on the team is aligned, informed, and able to act swiftly in high-stress situations. I learned that the ability to convey information clearly and succinctly is essential, not just for the successful management of a crisis, but also for fostering a cohesive and efficient team dynamic.
Equally important was the realization that remaining calm in the face of adversity is crucial for a leader. The ICU environment is inherently high-pressure, and during that incident, I understood that a leader’s demeanor can significantly influence the team’s performance. By staying composed, I was able to think more clearly, make better decisions, and provide the necessary guidance to my team. This sense of calm also helped to reassure my colleagues, enabling them to perform their roles more effectively despite the challenging circumstances.
Supporting my team during this critical moment underscored the importance of empathy and resilience in leadership. I recognized that, as a leader, it is essential to be attuned to the emotional and psychological needs of my team members, especially during crises. By offering support and understanding, I was able to help them navigate the stress and uncertainty of the situation, which in turn, strengthened our collective ability to manage the crisis.
3. What are some challenges
you face in your role, and how do you address them?
One of the primary challenges in the nursing profession is managing the intense stress and emotional strain that often accompany the role. The demands of caring for patients, especially in high-pressure environments, can take a significant toll on both mental and emotional well-being. To effectively address this, I place a strong emphasis on prioritizing mental health and well-being, not only for myself but also for my entire team.
Creating and maintaining a supportive work environment is a key aspect of this approach. I believe that fostering a culture of support where team members feel valued and understood is essential for mitigating the stress inherent in nursing. By promoting open communication, I encourage my colleagues to share their concerns, challenges, and feelings without fear of judgment. This openness helps to build trust within the team, enabling us to provide mutual support and navigate the emotional demands of our work more effectively.
In addition to focusing on mental health and well-being, I recognize the importance of staying current with the latest medical advancements. Healthcare is a constantly evolving field, and the challenges we face as nursing professionals are continually changing. To ensure that we are prepared to meet these challenges, I make it a priority to stay informed about new developments in medical science and healthcare practices. This commitment to continuous learning allows us to enhance our skills and adapt to the latest best practices, ultimately improving the quality of care we provide to our patients.
Moreover, by continuously improving our knowledge and skills, we not only enhance our professional competence but also boost our confidence in handling complex cases. This proactive approach helps to alleviate some of the stress associated with the uncertainty and rapid changes in healthcare, as we are better equipped to respond to new situations and provide high-quality care.
4. What achievements in your nursing career are you most proud of?
I take great pride in having implemented a mentorship program for new nurses, which has had a profound impact on their transition into the profession and has significantly enhanced the quality of patient care. This initiative was designed to provide new nurses with the guidance, support, and confidence they need to navigate the challenges of their early careers. Seeing the positive outcomes of this program, both in terms of professional development and improved patient outcomes, has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Another highlight of my professional journey has been serving as the Founding President of the Philippine Nurses Association in Ireland. This role allowed me to contribute to the nursing community on a broader scale, fostering connections and support among Filipino nurses in Ireland, and advocating for their professional growth and recognition within the healthcare system. Establishing this association was a significant achievement, as it provided a platform for collaboration, professional development, and advocacy for Filipino nurses, further enriching the nursing profession in Ireland.
Additionally, being honored with the 'Nurse Leader of the Year' award a couple of years ago stands out as a moment of immense pride. This recognition was not just a personal accolade but also a reflection of the collective efforts and dedication of my entire team. It affirmed our commitment to excellence in nursing leadership and patient care.
Most recently, graduating with a Master of Arts in Nursing, Magna Cum Laude, and receiving the High Academic Distinction award for the whole graduating class of 2024, has been another significant milestone. This achievement underscores the importance of continuous learning and professional development in nursing. It is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that I, along with my team, have poured into advancing the standards of nursing practice and advocating for better patient care.
These accomplishments are more than just personal milestones; they represent the collective efforts of everyone I have worked with, and they inspire me to continue striving for excellence in nursing. My journey in this field has been shaped by a commitment to mentorship, leadership, and lifelong learning, all of which are essential to driving positive change in healthcare.
5. What advice would you give to Filipino nurses aspiring to work internationally?
My advice to Filipino nurses is to cultivate resilience and adaptability as they navigate their careers abroad. Moving to a new country presents both challenges and opportunities, and it's crucial to embrace these experiences with an open mind. The ability to adjust to new environments, healthcare systems, and cultural norms is key to thriving in an unfamiliar setting.
Professional development should always be a priority. The healthcare field is constantly evolving, and it is essential to stay updated with the latest advancements and best practices. Continuous learning not only enhances your skills and knowledge but also positions you to provide the highest quality care to your patients. Whether it's through formal education, certifications, or simply staying informed about industry trends, never stop investing in your professional growth.
Another important aspect of succeeding in a new country is building a strong support network. Connecting with fellow Filipino nurses can be particularly beneficial, as they can offer invaluable guidance, share experiences, and provide encouragement during difficult times. These connections can help you feel less isolated and more grounded as you adjust to your new surroundings. Whether through professional associations, online communities, or informal meetups, staying connected with your peers can be a source of strength and solidarity.
Moreover, it's important to recognize
the value of your unique background and experiences as a Filipino nurse. The
cultural perspective you bring to your practice can be a significant asset in
providing compassionate and culturally sensitive care. Embrace your identity
and let it inform your approach to nursing in a way that enriches the care you
provide.
