Grounding Care in Kapwa and Kaginhawaan: Dr. Rudolf Martinez Inspires the Next Generation of Nurses

In a powerful and heartfelt keynote that stirred both intellect and emotion, Dr. Rudolf Martinez of San Beda University graced the 5th Dean Marietta H. Gaddi Lecture Series at Holy Angel University with a message that redefined nursing from the inside out.

An esteemed Nursologist and respected member of Beta Nu Delta Nursing Society and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Dr. Martinez brought to the fore the urgent call to anchor nursing practice in Filipino theoretical values—specifically, Kapwa and Kaginhawaan.

Dr. Martinez emphasized that nursing must move beyond procedures and protocols to embrace its deeper purpose: fostering human connection and alleviating suffering through culturally resonant frameworks. “Grounding care in Kapwa—our shared humanity—and aspiring for Kaginhawaan—a state of ease and well-being—is not only a reflection of our identity as Filipino nurses, it is our moral and professional responsibility,” he stated.

The audience, composed of nurses from various sectors and aspiring student nurses, listened intently. For the students especially, the message struck a chord. During a sit-down discussion that followed, Dr. Martinez engaged with them in thoughtful dialogue, encouraging them to see theory not as an abstract concept but as a living guide that informs compassionate and context-sensitive care.

His visit was more than a lecture; it was a moment of mentorship, of awakening. Many students expressed newfound clarity about their roles as future healthcare providers. “He made me realize that we are not just caregivers—we are champions of kaginhawaan for our kapwa,” said one nursing student.

The event served as a vibrant testament to what nursing can be when guided by theory, culture, and humanity. With thought leaders like Dr. Martinez at the helm, the future of Filipino nursing is in compassionate, capable hands—ready to serve, grounded in kapwa, and guided by the enduring pursuit of kaginhawaan.
